Limitless Performance with Husco AMG

In today’s economic landscape, manufacturers face a myriad of challenges on their path to growth. From navigating the complexities of supply chain disruptions and rising material costs to addressing the skilled labor shortages and fluctuating order volumes, the pressure to maintain profitability is immense. The common thread in overcoming these hurdles is the need to maximize efficiency and productivity. However, many businesses are hesitant to change their established practices and invest in automation. Despite this reluctance, which can stem from concerns about the initial investment, worries about replacing staff, and apprehension about change, embracing automation can streamline operations, reduce costs, and enhance overall performance in an increasingly competitive market. By delivering cutting-edge automation solutions, businesses can drive productivity, enhance quality, and save money long term, especially for small and medium manufacturing enterprises.

We Strive for Limitless Performance in Everything We Do!

Recently, Husco’s Advanced Manufacturing Group (AMG) was presented with a challenge by Dynatect, a mid-size manufacturer in Valparaiso, Indiana, to automate their manual assembly process to reduce direct labor and improve efficiency. “Dynatect had been hand-assembling their linkage units and wanted to automate the process to reduce direct labor and improve efficiency. We needed to figure out how to stage the parts optimally for assembly, which required significant trial and error,” said Hunter Poindexter, Husco AMG. Dynatect had a bad experience with a previous automation project and was hesitant to invest again. They needed a partner with the expertise and skill set to solve their problem.

Nathaniel from Dynatect shared, “We had issues with other automation projects before, so we wanted to learn from our past mistakes. My biggest priority was to make it as simple as possible and easy to service on the floor. It was about avoiding previous issues and ensuring serviceability moving forward.”

Mark from Dynatect added, “The parts to be assembled were small and delicate, leading to customer complaints when hand assembled. Automation was crucial for consistency. Husco’s team, including Aaron and Jacob, prototyped the assembly process during the quoting phase, which built our confidence in their capabilities.”

By understanding three key aspects — Willingness, Ability, and Capacity — our team was able to deliver a solution that met Dynatect’s needs.

Willingness: The Driving Force to Implement

The willingness of Dynatect to embrace automation underscores their commitment to improving workplace conditions and achieving higher productivity.  In the past they had been burned, however after working with Husco AMG, it paid dividends. Mark shared, “Automation doesn’t take PTO or time off, ensuring consistent productivity and reliability. It didn’t replace our employees; instead, it allowed them to shift their focus and prioritize other tasks, enhancing overall productivity, reducing the risk of injuries, and improving job satisfaction. The positive reaction from our team has been overwhelming.”

Ability: Husco AMG Has the Right Skills and Knowledge

Commitment to innovation and excellence is at the heart of our approach to automation. Our team became an extension of their own, working closely together to achieve the best results. Mark noted, “The AMG team demonstrated a strong commitment to the project’s success, staying on-site to resolve issues and ensuring that the final outcome exceeded our expectations.” Automation provided consistent assembly, reduced labor, and improved efficiency. “The automation cell achieved a cycle time significantly faster than the requirement set by Dynatect,” said Hunter Poindexter, Husco AMG.

Capacity: Automation Handles Increased Demands

Capacity directly impacts the return on investment (ROI) for any automation project. Automation has enabled Dynatect to meet increased demands without compromising quality. Before automation, Dynatect relied on two employees to hand-assemble parts, a process that was slower and posed risks to safety and quality.  As Mark expressed, “The automation project achieved a cycle time resulting in a 40% productivity gain. The quality of our assembled parts has also improved, with a 100% yield and no defects reported. This level of consistency was unattainable with manual assembly.”

“The piece of equipment Husco AMG built is going to be a showpiece when we bring people into the plant, whether they are customers, suppliers, or other visitors. It reinforces our commitment to investing in cutting-edge technology and continuous improvement.”
